In both speeches it shows how people follow what society is doing, instead of making their own decisions and thoughts about things.
. ”How to keep from going through your comfortable, prosperous, respectable adult life dead, unconscious, a slave to your head and to your natural default-setting of being uniquely, completely, imperially alone, day in and day out,” Wallace explains how to separate yourself from societies expectations, and he demonstrates that people stay in their comfort zone instead of experiencing what they would want to do. “She is convinced that when language dies, out of carelessness, disuse, indifference and absence of esteem, or killed by fiat, not only herself, but all users and makers are accountable for its demise,” she is explaining that the languages that aren’t being used in society are dying because people are just thinking like society instead of for themselves.
The speeches are different because Wallace is explaining that we need to be aware of the meaningful things in life, to not stress over the little things and to live your own life. “awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, that we have to keep reminding ourselves, over and over: “this is water, this is water.”’ Morrison is explaining that it’s your on outlook on language and how you should take things and our language makes us who we are. “Word-work is sublime, she thinks, because it is generative; it makes meaning that secures our difference, our human difference – the way in which we are like no other life.”
Wow you did a really great job on this! I totally agree with you. When I was trying to read the speeches and comprehend them, both speeches seemed so different to me but in this blog you posted, you point out really how similar they are in more depth than I did! You made some really good points that didn't even cross my mind! I wish I would have read your blog before I posted mine! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how you interpreted each essay to be similar and different. I like what you pulled from the essays comparing that you should learn to exercise control over what you think and having positive actions while saying you have responsibilities to control what you do in your life, an explain from the Nobel Prize essay. One thing I would add to the comparison side of your analysis is that the blind woman's focus wasn't really have a responsibility over the birds life, but that the bird was a metaphor for having a responsibility to keep language alive and spread a positive message. This can be compared back to Wallace's essay by saying that the people working their lives away should stop and realize that others could be having a hard time too, which is a perfect time to spread positive message to get people through tough times.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more with you. You very clearly were able to describe the differences and similarities between the two. Reading your blog reassured me that I was getting the right idea out of both speeches too. I liked when you were contrasting the two speeches, I was able to easily realize what you were saying. I believe that you were spot on with what the speakers were trying to convey with their speeches. Your quotes helped explain the point you were trying to get across excellently. You were able to go into easily go into detail about what each quote meant. You did great!
